Around 1 in every are affected by a mental health difficulty each year - including conditions like anxiety, depression, PTSD, and bipolar disorder. Around 1 in 100 people live with conditions such as schizophrenia or psychosis. Mental health issues have been exacerbated in recent years by both the pandemic and cost of living crisis. Around 1 in 65 of the population are living with dementia and this rises to one in 14 over 65 and 1 in 6 over 80.
Robust UK-based research shows that access to nature and gardening significantly improves mental health — reducing anxiety, depression, and stress while boosting mood, self-esteem, and social connection. The UK Government Evidence Summary Commissioned by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, this report synthesises over 600 studies and concludes that arts engagement improves mental health across all age groups. Benefits include reduced stress, enhanced mood, and better coping with trauma.
