Children who are unwell or need regular hospital care can miss out on school trips and other shared learning opportunities with their classmates. This project will bring the history of the Old Royal Naval College and our Baroque Painted Hall direct to their hospital ward.

For unwell children staying in hospital for extended periods, being away from home and school is not a pleasant experience. These children attend classes at on-site hospital schools but they miss out on fun, shared experiences such as school trips to local heritage sites like the Old Royal Naval College. The ORNC welcomes 6,000 children from schools to our site each year, but we wanted to develop a programme that includes children staying at London hospitals who miss out on these experiences.
Run in partnership with five London hospitals, our creative workshops take the Old Royal Naval College to the hospital school classroom. The fun creative activities are inspired by the incredible art, architecture and historic collections of our iconic site. We work closely with hospital school staff to make the sessions highly inclusive, tailored and adaptable for all backgrounds, needs and ages (5-16). Flexibility is key, as is sensitivity to each child’s medical condition and limitations.
