Whales, dolphins, and porpoises face growing threats from human activity worldwide, and urgent action is needed to protect them. We are raising funds for ORCA’s vital monitoring programmes, collecting data to safeguard these incredible animals from vessel strike and the other threats they face.

Whales and dolphins are facing mounting threats from marine pollution, overfishing, the devastation of vital habitats and vessel strikes (particularly for large whales). With global shipping traffic set to triple by 2050, these species - already struggling to recover from commercial whaling - are at growing risk. Urgent action is needed to reduce these threats and protect vulnerable populations before it’s too late and populations begin to decline once more.
ORCA trained volunteers (citizen scientists) and experts use “platforms of opportunity” such as ferries, freight and cruise ships to monitor whale, dolphin and porpoise abundance, behaviour and the threats. This data improves our understanding of cetaceans, supports scientific analysis and informs policy change. With support, we can expand monitoring efforts, improve resources, and engage more people in protecting these incredible gentle giants.
