The combination of the cost of living crisis, widespread child poverty and severe funding shortfalls in schools and the arts means that learning to play music and perform in public is a life experience that is out of reach for many disadvantaged families. With over a third of Camden's young people living in low-income households we want to ensure that the many benefits we can provide - from musical self-expression to self-confidence and belonging - remain accessible to all.

Our bursary scheme enables over 20 young people each year from disadvantaged backgrounds to experience the transformative benefits of community music-making. Individual lessons develop new skills while group music, and the community feel of the YMM hub on a Saturday, foster a sense of belonging and encourage friendships to develop. Numerous performance opportunities develop self-esteem and creative expression. Each term learners experience the joy of making real progress and great music.
