Participation in music is proven to increase school attendance & overall academic attainment. Lack of funding for music education in UK state schools deprives 1000s of young people of the opportunity to gain the unique skillset delivered through a music education alongside other subjects. 42% of schools do not have GCSE music students & A level music has fallen by 45% since 2010. Decades of austerity have widened the attainment gap for children in state schools in our most deprived communities.
Even the most committed school leadership teams struggle to resource music depts with sufficient durable instruments that serving many 100s of students over at least 5 years requires. RTM has found a simple solution with exponential benefits as evidenced by the wider school impact, a direct result of scaling up the music provision. This in turn, perhaps for the first time ever, strengthens the case for school senior leadership teams to allow for further investment in music despite budget cuts.
