UK Youth plays a unique role in tackling the insufficient investment in the youth sector and the limited understanding of the impact of youth work. These challenges lead to significant inequalities in access to youth services for young people.

Cuts to youth services risk creating a “lost generation.” Between 2010 and 2023, two thirds of council-run youth centres in England and Wales closed due to lack of funding. According to UNISON, 42% of councils no longer operate youth centres. This leaves young people isolated, at risk of anti-social behaviour, and without vital guidance, mentors, or safe spaces to socialise and develop.

As the hub of a national network of over 9,000 youth organisations, UK Youth is uniquely placed to drive change. We ensure all young people, regardless of background, can access opportunity. We fund, convene, develop, and research effective youth work to build a society that understands, champions, and delivers high-quality youth support for every young person.
