State school music provision is shrinking, with only 6.6% of arts GCSE entries coming from pupils in deprived areas. Many 11–16-year-olds have never heard live music (85% of pupils on our last tour). Without access to music and creativity, confidence and aspirations are stifled.
NYJO’s First Time Jazz tour brings live jazz directly into schools through inspiring, interactive gigs led by young musicians. As part of our National Widening Access programme, the tour reaches young people aged 11–16 in deprived areas, often offering their first ever music experience, while providing valuable training to NYJO's Emerging Professional musicians. ‘It was really good and enjoyable. I loved it so much.’ - Amelie, 13 ‘It made me want to learn an instrument.’ - Satveer, 14
