Women and marginalised groups in Burundi will fight hunger and build brighter futures through sustainable farming. They’ll grow nutritious food and start thriving businesses, with better incomes helping their children to attend school and break the cycle of poverty for the next generation.

Burundi is one of the world’s poorest countries. Over 50% of people face food insecurity, 52% of children under five are stunted and 76% of rural communities live in poverty. Climate change, poor soils, gender inequality and social exclusion deepen the crisis faced by Burundian families. With 90% relying on farming for food and income, urgent, targeted support is needed to help the most vulnerable farmers adapt and leave poverty behind amid increasingly extreme weather.

The project will work with 671 households in Rusaka, prioritising marginalised groups—women, people with disabilities, and indigenous Batwa communities—with additional households benefitting indirectly. It will build food security and incomes through climate-resilient farming, kitchen gardens, livestock, and savings groups. Participants will be empowered as leaders and decision-makers, actively improving their livelihoods, growing small businesses, and fostering inclusive, resilient communities.
