There is a nature-shaped hole in national and international criminal law. Currently, the most senior decision-makers —whether in corporations or government—face no criminal accountability when their actions lead to large-scale environmental destruction. Ecocide legislation seeks to establish a moral taboo around severe environmental harm, aiming to deter, prevent, and punish those responsible for causing the most significant damage to the natural world

Following a formal proposal in September 2024 from Vanuatu, Fiji, and Samoa, ecocide law is now officially on the table at the International Criminal Court and being proposed at government level in many countries around the world. This is a pivotal step toward holding society's most powerful criminally accountable when their decisions lead to severe environmental harm, with transformative potential for the protection of biodiversity, climate stability, and human well-being.
