There is well documented, significant under-representation of global majority communities in the workforce and visitor numbers accessing the heritage sector. Over 40 years ago, BCA’s mission was forged in a time of social upheaval, to address the devastating impact of racism on Black communities in the United Kingdom by mobilising the combined power of history and education to improve their experience and quality of life. Sadly, many of the conditions that gave rise to BCA persist to this day.

Black Cultural Archives, the home of Black British History has a mission to collect, preserve and celebrate the histories of people of African and Caribbean descent in the UK. We promote the importance of historical reflection as a powerful tool to help society learn from the past and work towards a more racially just and equitable future for all. We provide workforce development to enable under-represented communities to join the heritage sector, addressing the problem of under representation.
