Marine tourism presents a significant local threat to coral reefs and continues to grow and threaten these ecosystems. Harmful activities include touching and breaking coral, irresponsible finning, pollution and irresponsible anchoring. We have estimated that at one site, over 200,000 damaging incidents occur every year. Many marine tour operators are becoming more sustainable, but more work is needed to improve awareness, provide education and deliver realistic solutions.
The Reef-World Foundation reaches a global yet localised network of 28M divers, 6,600 dive centres, and 20,000+ snorkel centres via its Green Fins project, the only internationally recognised sustainability standard for dive and snorkel operators. Green Fins provides training and tools to help marine tourism meet sustainability goals via realistic actions.Through supporting Green Fins you are helping to directly prevent unsustainable activities that damage this incredible ecosystem.
