The incidence of cerebral palsy in Uganda is extremely high and is often caused when the brain is starved of oxygen or damaged in some other way at birth. In many cases this is preventable and we want to help reduce this incidence through healthcare, education and support.

A high number of children are being born in Uganda with cerebral palsy due to women not giving birth in a health facility and having medical staff on hand when issues arise. This leads to a lifelong burden for a child and their family, which in many cases could have been prevented if women were aware of the risks and knew where to go for help before giving birth.

ACHERU want to run community outreaches that will increase the awareness of women of the risks that can occur during childbirth and the life-long impacts for children who don't receive medical attention when it is needed. They will explain the causes and ensure that the women know where the maternity services are located and how they can access them. The team will also build on their existing support for those with cerebral palsy through physiotherapy and play equipment for children.
