Malawi’s low pre-school attendance - just 34% of children in 2023 - leads to poor learning outcomes, with only 19% of children aged 7–14 able to read at a basic level. This learning crisis traps many children in poverty and denies them the skills they need to succeed in school and beyond. Building quality pre-schools and training skilled teachers is key to breaking this cycle and giving every child a fair chance. Unlocking this potential will be crucial for Malawi’s long-term development.

With our partner, MPC Nkhoma, we have already set up four pre-schools in temporary structures such as churches across Pemba and trained 20 teachers. Funds raised will enable us to construct four official pre-school buildings - including a classroom, kitchen and toilet - so that children have access to a formal, safer place to learn for the first time. Not only will this improve learning outcomes, it will also encourage more parents to ensure their children access early learning opportunities.
