Will you increase and protect trees on farms? Over 70% of the UK is farmland, so this is where we can have positive impact most quickly. By 2030, we want half of UK farms to grow and look after trees, hedges and woodland —boosting biodiversity & improving soil health for people, wildlife & planet.

The intensification of farming has destroyed 50%+ of hedgerows and trees, decimating wildlife habitats where over 130 species should thrive. Hedgerows and trees are vital defences against climate change - their deep roots help keep the soil healthy, reduce erosion and store carbon. Combining trees with crops & livestock (known as agroforestry), as well as boosting wildlife and providing shade, can make the land more productive! But it is estimated only 3% of UK’s farmland currently does this.

Soil Association is uniquely placed to help get more trees onto farms. We bring deep farming insight, woodland expertise, a strong agroforestry track record, and trusted farmer networks—making us ideally set up to share knowledge and boost uptake of trees on farms. We’re supporting larger numbers of farmers through training and resources as well as advocacy - with the vision of leading the sector to understand the full potential of having more trees on farmland.
