Most of the electricity in Romsey Abbey is used by about 80 old high-level power-hungry halogen floodlights. We want to replace them with modern LEDs that use 75% less power, last longer and offer better control and lighting effects. This will help us towards our ambition of a Zero Carbon Abbey.

The Abbey's power bills have risen steeply in recent years, despite using the national Church's buying power. As part of the Church of England's aim to reduce carbon emissions, the Abbey is planning (as funding becomes available) a phased programme of Zero Carbon capital projects to end our use of fossil fuels and cut our operating costs. Where possible in an historic grade-1 listed building, we plan to use modern technology to increase long-term sustainability.

Our Abbey Zero Carbon group plan to use a variety of technologies including solar panels and batteries to generate our own power, better lighting controls etc. This Christmas Challenge campaign will continue a phased programme of replacing old halogen lights with more efficient and flexible LED lamps, reducing power costs and carbon by about 75%, and improving the flexibility of lighting schemes with better controls. To get to Zero Carbon we will need to replace old gas boilers with heat pumps.
