In 2026, we will be launching the Old Vic Community Choir; an exciting new pilot project which will support participants aged 18-100 from underrepresented backgrounds to build intergenerational connections, support wellbeing and reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation.

Loneliness and poor mental health are rising in the UK. In England, 1 in 4 people experience a mental health problem yearly, and 1 in 6 experience common mental health problems (e.g. anxiety) each week (Mind UK, 2025). Since COVID, numbers of young adults reporting depression have risen by 10% (ONS, 2022). 1 in 4 adults also now report feeling lonely regularly (ONS, 2025) and 16-29 year olds are over twice as likely to report loneliness than those over 70 (Campaign to End Loneliness, 2023).

This spring, we will launch a new intergenerational community choir for those affected by poor mental health and isolation. Across 12 weeks, 40 participants aged between 18 and 100 will take part in 13 interactive sessions led by a professional Musical Director to bring people together and harness the power of singing. The project will culminate in a final performance for family and friends and participants will also receive a backstage tour.
