Music education is disappearing from secondary schools, and fast becoming a preserve of the privately educated. A staggering 42% of secondary schools now enter no students at all for Music GCSE. Young people eligible for Free School Meals consistently score lower in music than their peers, and the Sutton Trust found that today’s top-selling musicians are 6x more likely to be privately educated. The knock on effects are clear - state-educated voices are being written out of the music industry.

Music teachers tell us that composition - where students write their own music - is the hardest to teach and hardest for students without private tuition to access. But composition doesn’t have to be elitist. Our evidence shows that students with little formal training, no expensive instruments, and a love of music from any genre can thrive in composition. Ear Opener offers a clear and workable way to upskill students and teachers through video tutorials, lesson plans and mentoring.
