Travel costs prevent many schools from attending the theatre, despite our commitment to offering accessibly priced schools’ tickets. We will launch the ‘Showtime Shuttle’ an initiative to support transport costs, helping young people access live theatre (sparking creativity, confidence & wellbeing).

93% of schoolchildren are now excluded from arts experiences due to lack of funding https://www.classicfm.com/music-news/children-excluded-arts-education/. Theatre trips are becoming rare luxuries instead of essential learning. Our recent survey found costs and travel logistics are the biggest barriers to school theatre visits (37% of responses). As access drops, young people lose the supportive space theatre provides to explore emotions, build confidence and vital life skills.
We are committed to making theatre accessible to young people, but cost and transport remain barriers. Our new Showtime Shuttle will support coach costs for primary and secondary schools, focusing on those with the greatest need. This advances our strategic goal to create pathways for Newcastle communities, connecting young people with theatre to inspire creativity, build confidence & support wellbeing.
