Beneficiaries
2% of the population have a learning disability, but often lack accessible opportunities to enjoy a life like any other. Approximately 40% of adults with learning disabilities experience mental health problems (NICE 2016) compared to 17% of the general population (NHS 2014), & are 7 times more likely to experience loneliness (Mencap 2019). The people we support face social isolation, low self-esteem, & low confidence; one person said, “If I wasn’t with Reach I would probably be at home all day.”
Our person-centred expert tutors will enhance opportunities for adults with learning disabilities (clients) to get creative by sustaining existing courses and developing new courses based on client feedback e.g. singing, crafts, woodwork, dance, drama, etc. Sessions will enable participants to express themselves in supportive environments and socialise with peers. Research has shown 'arts activities can lead to a statistically significant improvement in wellbeing' (Front Public Health, 2024).
