The mental health of young people is in crisis with one-third of 16–24s in the UK report signs of depression/anxiety. A UK Government study found that young adults involved in artistic activities felt happier and that their lives had more meaning. Yet for many, engaging with the arts is no longer an option: rising living costs and arts cuts have removed access, especially for under-served and disabled youth. It’s not taught, not affordable, and lacks representation.

In our 70th year we will work in 70 locations nationally, offering free or bursary-supported opportunities for young people to be together, be brave and create bold work, made stronger by the different experiences that every young person brings. Our inclusion programmes target marginalised, neurodivergent and disabled young people. NYT’s industry-led acting, backstage and leadership training provide progression routes and employment pathways, enhancing creative access and diversifying the sector
