Many migrants/refugees/asylum seekers are denied rights/status because they cannot obtain legal representation. It is almost impossible to get a solicitor via legal aid; of 100+ clients we referred last year, only 30 legal aid referrals succeeded. The immigration legal system is complex, unrepresented individuals are unlikely to succeed and risk detention/removal. Immigration law/policy is ever changing and often unlawful but can only be changed with campaign/legal pressure.
Rather than one-off advice, we help migrants, who cannot get free legal representation elsewhere, through the entire legal process. We even appeal refusals, ensuring the best conclusion to all cases. We provide wrap-around support via our foodbank/destitution casework, ensuring migrants can get income/food/housing whilst awaiting status. We cannot help everyone in need so aim to change systems combining litigation/lobbying/media to pressure the government to change harmful laws/policy.
