Refugee children in secondary school face some of the toughest barriers to staying in education and building brighter futures. Without targeted support, trauma, grief and years of missed schooling leave many children unable to cope in the very place that can help them. Our ‘Stay in School project’ is changing this.

Education is the key to hopeful futures for refugee children, yet those arriving in the UK face long delays accessing education. Getting through the door is just the first step - many then struggle to catch up on lost learning while coping with the effects of severe trauma, language and cultural barriers, poverty and uncertainty. Older secondary school students can find it hardest to catch up - leaving them at high risk of being overwhelmed or excluded.

We will provide a targeted aspiration raising and resilience building support programme for refugee children struggling to cope in school. Through a programme of 8 targeted group sessions, with wrap-around mentoring, and individual guidance, we will work to keep 60 at-risk refugee children, identified as at risk of drop-out, engaged in education, with raised expectations and specialist support to progress to the next level (typically from secondary to further education).
