Disabled children in Uganda face discrimination, stigma and severely limited opportunities. We want to change this. Our tried and tested model targets societal change to empower disabled children. We do this by working with disabled children, schools, families and local leaders.

In Uganda, disability is often seen as a curse. Therefore, disabled children are hidden from their families and communities. Their quality of life is severely limited as they are denied access to their basic needs including medical care, mobility aids and education. Over 1.28 million children over 5 live with disabilities in Uganda (Census, 2024), yet only 9% of disabled children attend primary school (Ugandan Govt, 2017). This project seeks to change this in Kayunga, Mukono, Jinja and Buikwe.
We will improve access to education for 3,152 disabled children using a four-pronged approach targeting teachers, parents, community leaders and disabled children to achieve societal change. We use sports for change is a tool for inclusion. Programme activities include: teacher and community leader training, inclusive sports festivals, income generation for parents, mobility aids, peer support groups, improved accessibility of school infrastructure and community sensitisation on disability.
