Older people, those living with dementia, and their carers, often lose their connection with others and with their community. They feel isolated, lonely and cut off from their community and have poor mental wellbeing as a result. 1.4 million older people in the UK report that they are often bitterly lonely, with 49% saying that their only company is a pet or the TV. Loneliness has been associated with an increased risk of premature death, and in particular, with a 40% increased risk of dementia.
The benefits of outdoor nature-based activities for older people and those living with dementia are well documented, including improvements in emotional state, physical health, verbal expression, memory and attention, awareness, multi-sensory engagement and joy, wellbeing, independence, self-esteem, social interaction and a sense of belonging. Our community gardening groups provide safe, accessible outdoor spaces for older people to meet new friends, engage with nature, and enjoy themselves!
