Action East Devon runs peer support groups offering a safe, welcoming space for young people facing mental health challenges. Rooted in East Devon’s communities, our Headlight groups help young people avoid crisis, manage their anxiety and stress, and rebuild their resilience and self-confidence.

The NHS estimated in 2023 that approximately 1 in 5 children in England aged 8 to 16 (20.3%) had a mental health condition, a stark increase from 1 in 8 before COVID. In May this year, the Children’s Commissioner reported on a postcode lottery for care, showing that young people in Devon face among the three longest waits in the country to get NHS help for their mental health, an average of 202 days. Our community based groups offer vital support for young people without access to other help.
Over 9 years of operation, we have developed community-based peer support groups which provide a safe space where young people can be open about the issues they face in a caring and non-judgmental setting. They are a place to talk, listen, and connect with others who understand what they’re going through. Our activities, ranging from cooking, art and music to challenges like self portrait photography and boxing, support young people and boost their wellbeing, self confidence and social skills.
