Funding training for more midwives so that every woman has a qualified birth attendant. AOT assists 3 local community health clinics in The Gambia - Jappimeh Health Center, Wellingara Health Clinic and the Bakary Sambouya Health Clinic. All provide an excellent service to their communities.

The Gambia is the eighth poorest country in the world. Many of its citizens cannot afford the cost of healthcare and medicine. Travel from these 3 clinics to the nearest hospital is too expensive for most locals. By having good, well trained midwives, mothers/babies can receive good perinatal care (from conception to one year after birth). Two clinics do not have a qualified midwife and the other has 2 midwives who are approaching retirement.
The solution is to sponsor 4 trainee midwives to qualify and then gain good experience. That is two at Jappineh and one each at Wellingara and Bakary Sambouya. AOT wish to secure this important service at all three clinics, well into the future.
