More than 600 elephants are in captivity in zoos and circuses across Europe. Before Pangea, there was no large-scale sanctuary to rehome them. Most EU states have banned the use of elephants in circuses and zoos are increasingly concerned about the welfare of their resident elephants. Without viable rehoming alternatives, governments are powerless to enforce wildlife laws and euthanasia often becomes a last resort.

We work with zoos, circuses and governments to offer lifelong sanctuary to elephants in need. By intensively rewilding our 1000-acre reserve, we are creating a rich, diverse habitat where elephants can roam freely and live more naturally. They receive individualised, expert care rooted in approaches endorsed by world-leading sanctuary specialists and wild elephant biologists. Our education and advocacy programmes will help raise awareness and inspire improved standards across Europe.
