Each year, over 300 cheetah cubs are stolen from the Horn of Africa (HoA) to feed the illegal wildlife trade (IWT). Reducing wildlife crime requires tackling the root causes: poverty, lack of opportunity & human-wildlife conflict (HWC) in the rural communities that border potential cheetah habitats.

Each year, over 300 cheetah cubs and other wildlife are stolen from the wild in the HoA, torn from their mothers and trafficked across borders to feed the illegal exotic pet trade. Many don’t survive the journey. Those who do, arrive malnourished, terrified, and permanently displaced from the wild. Since 2015, Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) has been leading the fight against this crisis in the HoA, working in Somaliland, a key trafficking route.
Using CCF’s proven Namibian model, we will build sustainable & alternative livelihoods & increase food security for women farmers in villages in GeedDeeble (GD) through training & ongoing support on livestock protection, producing 2 new alternative products for own use and sale & eco-guiding with 3 new eco-tourism initiatives designed and ready to be piloted. We will strengthen community structures in 42 villages in GD/Adwal, supporting livelihood development & management of natural resources.
