Malawi is facing a water crisis: 1 in 3 Malawians lack safe water, largely due to a lack of repair and maintenance that has caused over 40% of handpumps to be non-functional. Malawi’s water poverty leads to increased incidence of water-borne diseases, women and girls risking their health and futures to walk up to 6km daily to collect water, diminishing crop yields and high vulnerability to climate-related shocks, such as droughts.
Pump Aid takes a ground-breaking approach through our service delivery model that maintains a 99% functionality rate, far exceeding the 60% national average. We combat the overreliance on community volunteers by delivering guaranteed maintenance services that secures long-term water security. We also provide sustainable livelihood opportunities by employing local mechanics to perform routine repair and maintenance, mentoring them to build prosperous businesses around rural water.
