Otters are at great risk from habitat destruction and pollution. In South America few people research otters and their wetland habitats. This training workshop will create the next generation of researchers to obtain vital data so that realistic conservation plans can be proposed and implemented.

All otter species are declining worldwide and 5 species are found in South America. Otters in S. America are threatened by pressures on wetland habitats, climate change and degradation of rivers due to pollution and overfishing and problems associated with poverty. In many areas, otters also face conflict with fishermen who view them as a problem. It is important to have trained local people to work alongside communities and reduce conflict and encourage them to protect their otter populations.
IOSF will provide a training workshop with invitees from every country across South America. The workshop will train participants in the important areas of otter conservation including fieldwork, identification of signs and species, education works, community engagement and recognition of trade/harming of otters. Furthermore a cross-continent network will be established to share methods, best practices and information to ensure we can build a "picture" of otter status in the area.
