South Sudan is a country deep in crisis – facing dire hunger, disease outbreaks, droughts, floods, and conflict. But rather than cancel its unpayable debts, its creditors recently sued for hundreds of millions in the London High Court! Right now there are 53 more lower-income countries like South Sudan – trapped in debt and forced to choose between payments to wealthy lenders and the basic public services and support that people need. It’s time greedy lenders were forced to cancel unfair debts!
90% of the debts owed to big finance by countries like South Sudan are overseen by UK law. That means the UK government has the power to help end the global debt crisis. Side by side with campaigners from countries in crisis, we’re building on the momentum of the Jubilee Year to push for a new law here in the UK that would force private lenders to cancel unsustainable debts – and free up much-needed funds to invest in public services like healthcare and education.
