At Anawim we work with nearly 2,000 women every year, a large proportion of whom have experienced abuse; domestic, sexual, economic, or in other forms. We work with those women in many ways: crisis intervention, counselling, intensive long-term specialist support and other practical resources.

The majority of the women we work with have been subjected to abuse in their lives. For some, it is recent and they are having to flee their homes, or start anew. For others, it is further in their past, but the trauma of what was done to them still affects them. Abuse is one of the most common reasons for women to visit our drop in, and more than half of women in prison have experienced domestic abuse. Aside from the physical effects abuse is also hugely detrimental to women’s mental health.

We work with women in a variety of ways, holistically, and dependant on their circumstances. For those needing immediate assistance we might pay for a taxi, train ride or hotel. Our drop-in staff might signpost appropriate support, and listen to concerns or our IDVA may be the person who accompanies a woman to court and advocates on her behalf. Women can access courses and counselling at our centre, and we provide Domestic Violence Courses in prison too. We advocate on behalf of all women.
