Timely antenatal care saves lives - for mothers and their babies. In Garissa, less than a third of women attend 4+ of the 8 WHO-recommended antenatal care visits (ANC) - the lowest in Kenya. Contextual factors, such as fear of c-sections and a dominant patriarchal culture, play a key role here: men are the household decision-makers and their lack of support during pregnancy (financial, emotional or granting permission to attend clinics) can mean women miss out on life-saving maternal healthcare.

Team Dad is an innovative, community-based solution that brings men together to learn about, and champion, maternal and newborn health. Through Team Dad, we will create supportive household and social structures that help make pregnancies and births safer for women in Garissa County. Our innovative solution will work with gender champions, cultural and religious leaders, and 750 male partners, to promote the importance of antenatal care and maternal health.
