We target our work at disadvantaged families across Wandsworth. We help young children start school ready to read. We help primary-age children develop a love of reading, while building reading skills and confidence. We encourage and equip parents to support their children’s learning at home.

In Wandsworth 21% of children leave primary school not reaching age expected levels in reading (2024) and 28% live in poverty. Research shows disadvantaged children are less likely to read well than their more affluent peers. Poor reading skills in childhood can result in limited literacy in adults, bringing well-recognised risks of unemployment, poor health, low wages, and social exclusion. Half of UK prisoners have a reading age of 11 years or less.
We provide weekly one-to-one reading support from trained volunteers for primary-age children struggling with reading, building their skills, confidence, and enthusiasm. Our Early Years classes for 0-4 year olds and their parents prepare children to be ready to read in reception, focusing on songs, stories, and speaking and listening games. We encourage and equip parents to support their children’s learning at home providing parents with motivation, skills, and confidence.
