Our trained health workers educate their communities about disease prevention, care for pregnant mothers and diagnose common illnesses. In emergencies, health workers call out PONT motorbike ambulances to transfer patients to the nearest health centre.

Diseases such as cholera, malaria and pneumonia are common in the rural villages of Mbale region. Infant mortality and maternal mortality rates are high. There are no doctors in most villages and in remote areas, health centres can be difficult to reach. The terrain around the villages of Mbale region in Uganda is rocky and mountainous. Women used to struggle to get to the nearest health centre when they were in labour, or to the hospital when there were complications.

PONT’s 1200 volunteer village healthworkers are trained to provide essential primary healthcare.  PONT's 34 motorbike ambulances are specially designed for the terrain. Our drivers are trained first responders, and are linked to our network of community healthworkers. This integrated approach saves lives. PONT’s engineering workshop is now building Tuk-Tuk Ambulances in Mbale. We need to train more healthworkers to expand the service in an integrated way.
