Our campaign aims to raise vital funds to redevelop our existing resident seal pools which have not been replaced since our opening in 1975. The project will enable the Cornish Seal Sanctuary to be at the forefront of marine mammal welfare in the UK, giving our resident seals a new futureproof home.

The Cornish Seal Sanctuary provides a permanent home for 12 resident seals who cannot be returned back to the wild due to medical issues. Our existing pools were built in 1975 and need to be replaced in order to ensure that we can adhere to upcoming zoo licensing regulations and to futureproof our Sanctuary for generations to come. The Sanctuary also rescues and rehabilitates up to 70 seal pups in need each year, which would not be possible without the ongoing visitor income from the Sanctuary.

We plan to replace four of our existing resident seal pools with new circular pools designed for easier cleaning and long-term durability. A new ozone-based filtration system will be installed to improve water quality, and improved access will be created for our animal care team to more effectively train and enrich the seals’ lives. Additionally, a new convalescence building and pool will provide a safe, quiet space for them to recover from illness or surgery with dedicated care and attention.
