Women in Malawi’s prisons face hunger, trauma, and neglect. Many are mothers, survivors of abuse, or pregnant; imprisoned instead of protected. We’ll provide mental health support, gender-specific health services, and dignity for women forgotten by a system built for men.

These women live in overcrowded, unsanitary cells, without basic nutrition or healthcare. Pregnant women face a high risk of miscarriage or stillbirth. With only five psychiatrists serving the entire country, mental health care is non-existent for women behind bars. Many are imprisoned for acts of survival; battling poverty, defending themselves from abuse, or trying to provide for their children.

We deliver trauma-informed mental health care, peer-led support groups, and sexual health and rights education inside women’s prisons. We ensure access to vital services like HIV care, and family counselling. Partnering with the Malawi Prison Service, we advocate for gender-responsive policies and train staff to better support incarcerated women and the children they leave behind.
