We want to offer more opportunities for young people and their communities to participate in archaeology to help bridge the attainment gap. Connecting them with their heritage, we strengthen community ties, promote a sense of pride and belonging and develop skills for learning, life and work.

Archaeology Scotland's Attainment through Archaeology (AtA) programme benefits young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. Hands-on archaeology activities develop transferable skills for learning, life, and work. This boosts self-confidence for better educational outcomes bridging the attainment gap and improved health and well-being. In Scotland in 2023-24 only 65% of school leavers from the most deprived areas achieved passes at National 5 level, compared to 91% from the least deprived area.
By raising money to hold more Attainment Though Archaeology (AtA) courses and deliver the Big Dig at our base at Newbattle Abbey College we will provide a greater number of young people with more opportunities to participate in archaeology. By connecting them with their heritage, we strengthen community ties, promoting a sense of pride, belonging and helping to bridge the educational gap. This aligns with our core mission of inspiring and enabling engagement with Scotland's past.
