Empty Kitchens Full Hearts is an Edinburgh food charity. We turn surplus food into free, healthy meals for people in poverty. Our meal support is combined with wellbeing calls and a referral service. Good food is the first crucial step in a person improving their life chances.

Every year, we support over 1,100 people living in poverty in Edinburgh. People come to us when they have little or no food. This food insecurity does not occur in isolation. People are often facing multiple challenges, such as poor mental and physical health, insecure housing or homelessness, and refugee or asylum status. These challenges have severe impacts on people’s health, wellbeing, and confidence. People frequently share feelings of isolation and anxiety about the future.
When people’s basic needs are met with dignity, they can begin to improve their circumstances. We turn surplus food into free, nutritious meals delivered to homes, temporary accommodation, or collection points. Alongside meals, we offer wellbeing calls and referrals to tailored services. This approach means people are eating well and feeling supported. People tell us this eases anxiety, boosts wellbeing, and helps them find long-term care and solutions.
