Beneficiaries
Cultural engagement brings many developmental, cognitive and social long-term benefits for young children. However, budget cuts have led to a 50% reduction in school trips since 2022, with disadvantaged schools facing cuts of up to 68% (Sutton Trust). We prioritise schools, with over 50% of visiting pupils in receipt of free school meals or local special schools. Primarily these are families who experience a wealth of emotional, cultural and societal barriers to accessing heritage spaces.
This is a highly targeted and effective programme which aims to engage schools, pupils and families in and around Bristol. We reach the most educationally deprived schools and invite them to bring students on a free school trip to the SS Great Britain, which includes various STEM-related activities. The entire cost of the trip is covered, and every child taking part receives a ‘Golden Ticket’ which entitles them to return for free with their family to share in the experience.
