Our project will create opportunities for our members with learning disabilities to gain a range of work skills and experience. It will support them to look for employment locally and to make the most of paid work opportunities within SWALLOW.

Many of the people that we support want to work, but struggle due to lack of skills, confidence and often need support through the application process, plus there is a lack of understanding of learning disability in the community. Currently, just 5.1% of people with learning disabilities in England are in paid employment, compared with 75.1% of the general population. One of our members was once told at school 'you will never work' - we have since proved that statement wrong.

We support members to gain valuable skills and experience, through our community cafés, horticulture and craft projects. We help them to construct CVs, support them through the application and interview process and provide ongoing support. We work with local employers to break down barriers and show the positive contribution our members could make. Through offering paid opportunities within SWALLOW, we provide the motivation and understanding our members need that their efforts are valuable.
