Refugees have lost their home, family, friends, or all three. They often come from cultures where community is extremely important, but arrive in the UK with no support network. Upbeat welcomes refugees into community and supports them to rebuild their lives, through practical and emotional support.

In Derby, there are as many as 1500 asylum seekers and hundreds more refugees facing isolation, poverty, and poor mental health—on top of trauma from their home countries and journeys to the UK. Their support networks are many miles away, and there are many barriers to their integration into new communities, including language, cultural differences, and a hostile asylum system amidst a climate of growing distrust of refugees and asylum seekers among the general public.
Upbeat welcomes refugees without judgment, and gives them a place to connect with others in similar situations, building community to combat isolation. Upbeat also enables refugees to connect with British people. We run English classes and social activities so people can learn the language in formal and informal settings, and get to know UK culture. We provide practical support, advice, and help registering for other essential services, including schools, GPs, and immigration solicitors.
