16% of Richmond upon Thames residents are over 65, predicted to rise to 25% by 2043. We know many older people in Richmond Upon Thames face loneliness, bereavement, reduced mobility, financial and housing issues, caring duties and lack of digital skills. These challenges can impact independence and quality of life. Loneliness alone increases the risk of dementia, heart disease, and stroke. Furthermore, some older people are also facing added pressures due to the cost of living crisis.
Age UK Richmond supports over 4000 older people to live independently and with dignity. We combat loneliness through groups and befriending; reduce financial hardship through helping access to welfare benefits; and promote wellbeing through exercise and social activities. Our digital training, handyperson and home help services boost independence. We provide practical help after hospital discharge. 85% of users report positive outcomes including better health, confidence, and reduced isolation.
