When girls and women can access clean water close to home, they are safer and healthier. They go to school, they can work. They thrive. This Christmas, help us reach more women and girls in rural communities across Africa with the transformative power of clean water.

In Eastern and Southern Africa 226m people don't have access to clean water close to home. Water sources are too far or are in disrepair. In rural communities, girls and women walk an average of 3.7 miles every day just to fetch enough water for their families. Leaving early morning, they may come back too late to go to school. An evening walk puts them at risk of sexual violence. Bringing clean water close to home keep girls and women safer, healthier and better equipped for a brighter future.

Amref uses a community-owned and led model to water management. We partner with communities to identify water challenges and local solutions where relevant. We train community members to repair boreholes and water systems. We work with schools to inform children and their families on safe hygiene practices so the community is equipped with the skills, knowledge, and resources to protect their clean water sources for years to come.
