The destruction caused by the conflict in Tigray has left women facing childbirth complications with nowhere to go for help – often causing long-term health issues and even the death of mother and baby. We are working with local partners to help women access the vital life-saving care they need.

For two years, Ethiopia’s northern region, Tigray, has endured one of the deadliest armed conflicts in recent history, and it is women and children who have suffered the most. Health services have been decimated, forcing expectant mothers to make long and gruelling journeys to their nearest clinic, sometimes taking days, only to find them looted or rapidly running out of supplies. Without urgent care, complications in childbirth can lead to tragic loss.
By providing the right support, we can save babies’ lives and prevent more women from enduring this suffering. Our partners are working to train and equip Maternal Health Ambassadors, who travel into remote communities, identify pregnant women at risk, and help them access the care they so urgently need. They are also building and restoring maternity waiting homes so women can travel before they are in active labour, as well as re-equipping clinics with life-saving supplies.
