Wivey Cares, a community led project in the 10 Parishes area of West Somerset, uses an innovative approach to match the needs of an ageing rural population with affordable local care. Our model is being adopted throughout Somerset. We campaign to raise funds towards our core costs of £35000/year.

ONS figures show Somerset's population is ageing faster than the national average, with 25% older than 65. By 2030 it will be 30%. Those older than 75 in rural areas are more prone to emergency admissions. Inadequate health/social care resources, deteriorating mental/physical health, lack of money, insufficient physical/digital connectivity factors are all factors causing poor health, poverty, limited access to services/work, delayed hospital discharges, self-neglect and loneliness/isolation.
With Adult HSC provision in crisis, a sustainable response is a localised model of care such as ours: • We broker care using local carers at a cost of £10/hour less compared to agency fees. • We enable rapid hospital discharges and source health care equipment. • We help clients stay home longer which means large savings for the Local Authority. • We improve clients’ finances by applying for Attendance Allowance. • We support people with memory loss through the weekly Memory Activity Group.
