Approximately 105,000 people in the UK live with a spinal cord injury leaving them paralysed and facing chronic & debilitating medical complications. Our research tackles mental health, neuropathic pain, recurring urinary tract infections, pressure ulcers, impaired upper limb function, bladder & bowel issues, & sexual function. Ask a wheelchair user what their biggest challenge is, & they won’t say it’s their inability to walk; instead, it will be these issues that are their main challenges.

SMSR aims to improve the quality of life of individuals with Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) by supporting high quality research that tackles the day-to-day chronic and debilitating medical complications of paralysis that people with SCI say pose the greatest challenges to them, as outlined above. We fund research that has the most potential to bring real changes to the treatment and care of people with SCI, helping them to avoid marginalization, regain independence, and live full and productive lives.
