There is more demand for mental health support in BANES than can be routinely provided by mental health services and charities. Supported referrals to nature-based activities are proven to improve health outcomes. Across the last 18 months, our Gardeners presented with the following challenges: 67% were struggling with depression, 58% with anxiety, 48% had low confidence, and 45% felt isolated. 53% of all adult referrals have been unemployed, 27% for more than a year, and 7% have never worked.
In the safe space of a garden and working in small groups, our Gardeners are taught horticultural skills and gain experience of gardening in a variety of settings, learning social skills to help them overcome isolation, build relationships, and increase their confidence and self-esteem. We offer a range of horticultural opportunities, including garden maintenance, vegetable and flower growing, orchard work, and a Herbs & Nature group. We help individuals flourish and live life to the full.
