We target our work at disadvantaged families across Wandsworth. We help young children start school ready to read and help primary-age children develop a love of reading, through building skills and confidence. We encourage and equip parents to support their children’s learning at home.

Literacy transforms life chances and breaks cycles of disadvantage. In Wandsworth 28% of children are living in poverty and as a result are less likely to read well than wealthier peers; being up to a year behind before even starting school. They then become adults with low literacy who are ill equipped for modern life and have a greater likelihood of being unemployed and of remaining in poverty. In 2024 21% of Wandsworth's children did not meet government expected reading targets.

We aim to make every child in Wandsworth a reader and break the cycle of poverty. Developing a love of reading during childhood has the biggest effect on academic success. We offer weekly one-to-one support from trained volunteers for primary-age children struggling with reading; building their skills, confidence and enthusiasm and work with parents to empower them to support reading at home. Our classes for 0-4 year olds and their parents prepare children to be ready to read in reception.
