The UK is in the grip of a household debt crisis, as more and more of us struggle to make ends meet. And as people struggle with council tax, councils are sending in bailiffs – using violence to intimidate people into paying debts they can’t afford. This isn’t right! It’s time to ban the bailiffs.

The UK is facing a household debt crisis – with record numbers forced to borrow just to make ends meet, and over 10 million people struggling to pay bills like council tax. But instead of support, people in arrears face violence and intimidation from bailiffs. Council use of bailiffs is soaring. But traumatising low-income households and adding fees to their debt only pushes them into greater hardship. The system punishes marginalised people, rather than offering solutions to help them cope.

Through a combination of local-level community organising and national-level campaigning, we’re calling on local authorities to ban the bailiffs. In communities facing high levels of debt, we’re working to empower people who are struggling with debt to effectively campaign for, and win, policy change in their local councils. Nationally, we’re mobilising supporters and charities to push for policy change, advocating for stronger protections and to stop the build-up of massive amounts of debt.
